OWNER/HEAD COACH

What is my fitness background?
I inherited the love of sports from my mom, but I wasn’t very good at playing any of them. I dabbled in snow skiing, gymnastics, tennis, softball, bicycle racing, and running (believe it or not). In college I made the crew (rowing) team – I was the coxswain for the heavyweight men’s team, and I rowed with the lightweight women (mostly to have credibility as a coxswain). I even tried out for the Olympic team, as a coxswain, but didn’t quite make it. Before finding CrossFit I went through Dance Works, kickboxing, and boot-camp trends.

How did I find CrossFit?
Our off-the-water workouts for the crew team were similar to CrossFit which planted the seed, many years ago, in college. Technically, I found CrossFit in about 2009. A very close friend of mine invited me to a backyard pool workout called “The Grand.” I had so much fun that day – I felt like a kid at a playground! I never turned back.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of your life?
CrossFit has made my life better in all the obvious ways – the amazing community, the mutual support, the fact that it builds character, makes me feel empowered, and that I’ve gotten fitter in my old age. But, CrossFit really changed my life when I found out it gave my family and friends a reason to be proud of me. All of them came to cheer for me when I went to the CrossFit Games – and they supported me even more strongly when I failed miserably. My family and my CrossFit family held my head above water through the terrifying, exhilarating, unforgettable experience of The Games. Without them, I would not have been able to run through that tunnel! Which is a good segue to the next question …

Something most of us don't know about you?
I’m afraid of everything… everything. I don’t let my fear stop me because my greatest fear is that I’ll miss out on something. True story.

Also, I get really distracted during workouts and cannot concentrate – on rep’s, rounds, which movement to do – you name it, I’ve messed it up. I just have to hope that, over time, I do too much as often as I do too little.

OWNER/HEAD COACH

What is my fitness background?
I played a lot of sports growing up, soccer, football, basketball, a little bit of baseball and golf.  I just enjoyed being active and competitive.  I never did much in terms of exercise; I did join a gym for a little bit in high school because my coach told me I needed to put on size, lol not the first or last time I have heard that.

How did I find CrossFit?
My roommate and I were watching ESPN and the CrossFit Games came on. He called over to CrossFit Temecula and set us up for a class with Nick.  Our first class was just him and I and we went through a quick workout maybe 8 mins or so of running, box jumps, and pushups.  Nick told us to come back as much as we would like in the next 2 weeks, needless to say after 2 weeks I was hooked.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of my life?
Where do I start?  CrossFit has given me everything, I moved away from family so to join something so community oriented has been awesome.  I just like many of you have a tendency to always think about what is next, and how I am going to handle it, CrossFit forces me to stay present and in the moment.  CrossFit has allowed me to be the best version of myself.

Something most of you don’t know about me.
I grew up in a small town called Red Bluff, in northern California.  I am the youngest of 4, and I enjoy wakeboarding.  I don’t take myself to serious, and love jokes so if you have any I am all ears!

CROSSFIT TEMECULA FOUNDER

What is your fitness background?
I have always been involved with fitness in some capacity. Wether it was football with the neighborhood kids or doing physical training with my Marines, I've always kept my body moving. I played Hockey in middle and high school, as well. CrossFit has been the best, and my primary means of fitness since 2009.

How did you find CrossFit?
In 2009, I was seeing a chiropractor friend of mine for a shoulder injury I got from traditional weightlifting. He suggested I try CrossFit because of the scalability and the movements are functional, thus good for rehabilitation. I looked it up when I got home from his office and thought no way am I doing that stupid stuff. Fast forward a few months and he finally got me in the gym to try a workout and I was absolutely hooked. I couldn't believe a 12 minute workout could do that to you.

How has CrossFit affected your life?
Pretty much everything I have now has to do with CrossFit. I met my wife, pretty much all my friends, and have even reconnected with some old friends because of CrossFit. I've traveled the world teaching this methodology and can honestly say it has changed my life forever.

Something most of us don't know about you?
I've done so much in my life and I'm a very open book, so most I have spent a decent amount of time around know me. If I had to pick something I would say the thing people know least about me is I was a guitar player and singer in a punk rock band for a few years. I love music and still write, play, and sing from time to time. I loved being in a band and performing. I definitely miss that.

What is your fitness background?
I grew up wrestling, playing baseball and football, running track and pole vaulting, and doing martial arts. During college I stayed active by going to the gym and playing intramural sports like flag football, indoor/outdoor soccer, and ultimate Frisbee.

How did you find CrossFit?
My brother-in-law introduced me to CrossFit in 2013. He invited me to his box because he believed I would love it and that it was right up my alley. Sure enough, I was hooked after my first workout and haven’t looked back since. I still visit his box and have known the same members since 2013. We have even done a few competitions together.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of your life?
CrossFit has been my favorite form of therapy. There is no better place to turn up the music, lift heavy, and get destroyed by a "metcon" when you need to escape all the crazy things going on in your day to day life.

I'm California born, but Wisconsin grown. I grew up in the Midwest and will always consider it my home.

What is your fitness background?
Growing up I played absolutely every sport that was available to me. My favorite was soccer. In college I turned to long distance running and ran a few local marathons and half marathons. I went to school in Seattle and it was hard not to fall in love with it, I lived right on the Burke Gillman Trail!

How did you find CrossFit?
At UW we had a huge athletic complex available to us and that’s how I got into strength training. After school I saw a video of Camille Leblanc-Bazinet on YouTube and couldn’t not try Crossfit. I still remember my first day and how nervous I was.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of your life?
I’m in the best shape of my life even after having three babies in four years. I’ve found confidence in myself and a love for my body I never had pre-Crossfit. I’m also an Active Duty Marine Corps spouse and have moved all around the country with my family—the Crossfit community has always been there for us. The mental health benefits are second to none.

I use to be a competitive figure skater!

What is your fitness background?
I grew up playing baseball since I was three years old and was fortunate enough to play in college at Alma College in Michigan, and Vanguard University in Costa Mesa. My mom (Camille) started CrossFit in 2008 and I remember doing my first workout in a pool. I was in 8th grade at the time. I did it off an on through high school, and took a break my first two years of college just focusing on strength for baseball. I realized through a trainer at my school that being overall physically prepared was the best way for me to progress as a baseball player so I did a combination of strength workouts and metabolic conditioning workouts with a few other guys on my team who had CrossFit backgrounds. I graduated from Vanguard in 2017 and received my level 1 certificate that October, and then my kids certificate a year later.

How did you find CrossFit?
I learned about it through my mom who started doing it with people from her work in a trainers garage in San Jacinto. I have been luck to see my mom qualify for the games twice, so seeing her compete made it an easy transition from baseball to CrossFit, to fuel that competitive fire.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of your life?
I gained more body awareness and adaptability for my sport originally. On another side, I also met a lot of great people through it and made some good friends. It has brought me closer together with my mom, being able to do the same workout with her side by side and give each other knuckle bumps after suffering through a WOD together. It has also given me more confidence to tackle things that are hard to face, by constantly having to show mental toughness which translates into real life situations.

On top of coaching CrossFit I am also a fifth grade teacher at a charter school and I am the head coach of the middle school and high school baseball teams, and I am in the process of starting and elementary baseball elective to go along with a CrossFit kids program.

What is your fitness background?
I tried out every youth sport Temecula had to offer but really only took a liking to football, however my fitness mostly came from skateboarding with my buddies sunup to sundown. Once I reached high school I played water polo and wrestled, then shoulder injuries came along and kind of put an end to that. After that I was pretty sedentary until I joined the Navy and all my buddies were into traditional bodybuilding, so that was pretty much all I did for years until I found Crossfit.

How did you find CrossFit?
One of my brothers introduced me to CrossFit and my initial reaction towards it was very naive. The people I surrounded myself with had a very uneducated perception of what CrossFit was, which basically trickled down to me with no personal research on the training methodology, I had seen the games on espn before but just bits and pieces. That all changed when I saw “Fittest On Earth, The Story Of The 2015 Reebok CrossFit Games”. I watched this thing called CrossFit take my love for all things exercise and turn into a high intensity competition where these super humans were just doing the most incredible things I’d ever seen and needless to say I was hooked. From there I started watching YouTube videos for programming, doing solo WOD’s in globo gyms and when the weird stares from onlookers got old I decided it was time to find a box.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of your life?
CrossFit has had a profound effect on my life in a therapeutic and rehabilitating way. In the first 6 years of my Naval career I deployed 3 times with 2 joint warrior operations in between, so I was gone more often than I was ever home, spending every waking hour with a few men I call my brothers in a tiny tin can in places where rainbows definitely don’t exist. We were a tight knit crew and over that time period the things we endoured together had an effect on us that most didn’t realize or care to admit. Everyone handled it in a different way but some worse than others and because of that some of my brothers are no longer with us. My realization came when it was time to come home for good and as time passed it started to set in that I had lost the ability to associate with others, particularly new people but even the ones I cared for most. It’s a difficult enough journey of misunderstandings and slow realizations for you to go through, but it’s especially difficult for your family because they’re the ones that suffer while you’re gone and now you’re home so everyone expects it to be normal but normal is now lost. CrossFit helped me find my normal, the high intensity nature of the WOD’s gave me the outlet I needed to work through the misunderstandings, the suffer together as a group helped strengthen the community aspect for me which in turn slowly showed me how to reintegrate with civilian society. To put it simply, I came for the fitness but what I got was more than I could have ever expected.

Tell us something most of us don't know about you.
I absolutely hate the cold, anything below 80 and I’m whining like a baby. Anything below 50 and I’m not leaving my house without a good reason. Ironically though I love to snowboard which can only be done at freezing cold temperatures.
