OWNER/HEAD COACH

What is my fitness background?
I inherited the love of sports from my mom, but I wasn’t very good at playing any of them. I dabbled in snow skiing, gymnastics, tennis, softball, bicycle racing, and running (believe it or not). In college I made the crew (rowing) team – I was the coxswain for the heavyweight men’s team, and I rowed with the lightweight women (mostly to have credibility as a coxswain). I even tried out for the Olympic team, as a coxswain, but didn’t quite make it. Before finding CrossFit I went through Dance Works, kickboxing, and boot-camp trends.

How did I find CrossFit?
Our off-the-water workouts for the crew team were similar to CrossFit which planted the seed, many years ago, in college. Technically, I found CrossFit in about 2009. A very close friend of mine invited me to a backyard pool workout called “The Grand.” I had so much fun that day – I felt like a kid at a playground! I never turned back.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of your life?
CrossFit has made my life better in all the obvious ways – the amazing community, the mutual support, the fact that it builds character, makes me feel empowered, and that I’ve gotten fitter in my old age. But, CrossFit really changed my life when I found out it gave my family and friends a reason to be proud of me. All of them came to cheer for me when I went to the CrossFit Games – and they supported me even more strongly when I failed miserably. My family and my CrossFit family held my head above water through the terrifying, exhilarating, unforgettable experience of The Games. Without them, I would not have been able to run through that tunnel! Which is a good segue to the next question …

Something most of us don't know about you?
I’m afraid of everything… everything. I don’t let my fear stop me because my greatest fear is that I’ll miss out on something. True story.

Also, I get really distracted during workouts and cannot concentrate – on rep’s, rounds, which movement to do – you name it, I’ve messed it up. I just have to hope that, over time, I do too much as often as I do too little.

OWNER/HEAD COACH

What is my fitness background?
I played a lot of sports growing up, soccer, football, basketball, a little bit of baseball and golf.  I just enjoyed being active and competitive.  I never did much in terms of exercise; I did join a gym for a little bit in high school because my coach told me I needed to put on size, lol not the first or last time I have heard that.

How did I find CrossFit?
My roommate and I were watching ESPN and the CrossFit Games came on. He called over to CrossFit Temecula and set us up for a class with Nick.  Our first class was just him and I and we went through a quick workout maybe 8 mins or so of running, box jumps, and pushups.  Nick told us to come back as much as we would like in the next 2 weeks, needless to say after 2 weeks I was hooked.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of my life?
Where do I start?  CrossFit has given me everything, I moved away from family so to join something so community oriented has been awesome.  I just like many of you have a tendency to always think about what is next, and how I am going to handle it, CrossFit forces me to stay present and in the moment.  CrossFit has allowed me to be the best version of myself.

Something most of you don’t know about me.
I grew up in a small town called Red Bluff, in northern California.  I am the youngest of 4, and I enjoy wakeboarding.  I don’t take myself to serious, and love jokes so if you have any I am all ears!

CROSSFIT TEMECULA FOUNDER

What is your fitness background?
I have always been involved with fitness in some capacity. Wether it was football with the neighborhood kids or doing physical training with my Marines, I've always kept my body moving. I played Hockey in middle and high school, as well. CrossFit has been the best, and my primary means of fitness since 2009.

How did you find CrossFit?
In 2009, I was seeing a chiropractor friend of mine for a shoulder injury I got from traditional weightlifting. He suggested I try CrossFit because of the scalability and the movements are functional, thus good for rehabilitation. I looked it up when I got home from his office and thought no way am I doing that stupid stuff. Fast forward a few months and he finally got me in the gym to try a workout and I was absolutely hooked. I couldn't believe a 12 minute workout could do that to you.

How has CrossFit affected your life?
Pretty much everything I have now has to do with CrossFit. I met my wife, pretty much all my friends, and have even reconnected with some old friends because of CrossFit. I've traveled the world teaching this methodology and can honestly say it has changed my life forever.

Something most of us don't know about you?
I've done so much in my life and I'm a very open book, so most I have spent a decent amount of time around know me. If I had to pick something I would say the thing people know least about me is I was a guitar player and singer in a punk rock band for a few years. I love music and still write, play, and sing from time to time. I loved being in a band and performing. I definitely miss that.

What is my fitness background?
I've been and athlete and coach of multiple sports and activities my whole life: swimming, triathlons, running, personal training. I can’t imagine not partnering with people in their fitness journey.

How did I find CrossFit?
My first day in 2012 I had to call my friend from the parking lot to get the courage just to walk in the door. Once there, I thought, “Oh my gosh, these are my people!” My favorite part of Crossfit is the community but also the constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements that never get boring.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of my life?
This sport is really just a way of life for me now.  It's a huge privilege to get to coach something I love so much and be a part of seeing so many people become stronger and fitter. Crossfit makes me feel strong and empowered and younger than my chronological age. My favorite thing isn't my own achievements but all the triumphs in the Crossfit box that all of you let me be a part of. I’m humbled and inspired by the drive and dedication I see in so many of you no matter your fitness level or years doing Crossfit.

Something most of you don’t know about me.
Outside of Crossfit, I’m a mom to a young teen and a miniature dachshund. I'm a closet nerd, Ironman triathlete  and obstacle course racer (Spartan, specifically). I've had the privilege of living and working in multiple countries around the world. But, Crossfit Temecula is my fitness home.

What is your fitness background?
I grew up wrestling, playing baseball and football, running track and pole vaulting, and doing martial arts. During college I stayed active by going to the gym and playing intramural sports like flag football, indoor/outdoor soccer, and ultimate Frisbee.

How did you find CrossFit?
My brother-in-law introduced me to CrossFit in 2013. He invited me to his box because he believed I would love it and that it was right up my alley. Sure enough, I was hooked after my first workout and haven’t looked back since. I still visit his box and have known the same members since 2013. We have even done a few competitions together.

How has CrossFit affected the rest of your life?
CrossFit has been my favorite form of therapy. There is no better place to turn up the music, lift heavy, and get destroyed by a "metcon" when you need to escape all the crazy things going on in your day to day life.

Tell us something most of us don't know about you.
I'm California born, but Wisconsin grown. I grew up in the Midwest and will always consider it my home.

What is my fitness background?
I played football and wrestled through middle and high school.  Once I graduated I joined the Marine Corps and always loved the physical aspect of it.  I was your typical gym rat doing lots of weightlifting and functional fitness type workouts.

How did I find Crossfit?
During a trip to Colorado I was duped into my first Crossfit WOD called “The Ghost”.  I was quickly humbled!  As soon as I returned to SoCal I joined CFT and have loved every minute of the pain.

How has crossfit affected the rest of your life?
Crossfit has provided me with a way to challenge myself daily to improve physically and mentally.  That mental toughness translates to all areas of my life and has just reinforced what I already know.  Life is messy…  Just like a nasty workout…  You just keep chipping away at it and the results are worth it.

Something most of us don't know about you?
I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up!

What is my fitness background?
My mom stuck me in swim lessons when I was 6 months old and I’ve been involved in some kind of sport ever since. I’ve played soccer, softball, volleyball, gymnastics, dance, I ran track & cross country, I’ve ran a few marathons—and believe it or not, I was even a competitive figure skater. Sport has always been a huge part of my life. Now, if I’m not at the gym, I’m usually on my yoga mat while my kids are napping, or I’m out on a hike with my family.

How did I find Crossfit?
After I graduated from college I was an officer candidate in the United States Marine Corps. One of the Staff Sergeants at the Officer Selection Office recommended Crossfit to get in shape for OCS. We did a lot of body weight workouts—lots of variations of Cindy and Murph. Needless to say I got very good at strict pull-ups. I got addicted to how strong I felt. I also am a very competitive person so it’s always fun to put your foot on the gas and go all out.

How has Crossfit affected the rest of your life?
How hasn’t it affected it? I think the first big change was the automatic community I became a part of. As a military spouse, my family moves all the time and I’m left trying to keep things as normal as possible for the kids. Crossfit has been key to feeling “at home” wherever we go. I’ve wodded through two pregnancies so far and I’ve never felt so strong or so confident and proud of my body. I think that’s huge. My husband and my dad have started Crossfit too so it’s been rewarding to see it change their lives as well.

Something most of us don’t know about you?
If you know me at the gym, you know I’m relentless. I will work on something until I have it. But what you don’t know is that I am relentless pretty much everywhere. I always want to do something better, to be better. It’s almost a joke now. Once my husband and I were at the park with our boys and there was (a ridiculously long!) set of monkey bars. He jumped up and swung all the way across them. So I had to try, of course, but I kept losing my grip and dropping. I had him cracking up because I kept going back to those monkey bars the whole time we were at the park until I got across. I’m 27 but I’m still the 10 year old girl at the playground who isn’t going to be told she can’t do something.

What is your fitness background?
My fitness background has mostly consisted of fitness through lifestyle, such as swimming, bike riding, hiking, and moving through activities that I can do with my family and friends. I've been teaching yoga for about a decade and practicing about 20 years, it's been a constant and growing practice for me.

How did you find crossfit/yoga?
CrossFit kind of found me when a couple students (who i really trust & respect) suggested that I look at how we might use yoga and CrossFit to offer the athletes a well rounded aspect to their fitness programming. I started yoga with a VHS tape (remember those?) and was surprised at how challenging physically it could be along with how in the moment a person could be when practicing it, I was hooked.

How has crossfit/yoga affected your life?
CrossFit and yoga share the same variable when it comes to how they have each affected my life, and thats the community and "family" of people that continue to support each other and help one another grow. Making new friends and building positive relationships with people has been the best part of being introduced to and joining the CrossFit Temecula team. I'd also add that i've never used as much chalk in my life as I have since being part of CrossFit (just sayin')

Something most of us don’t know about you?
I'm not sure there is much people don't know about me, I don't keep things to myself too often :) I do however like to bake, more specifically lemon meringue pie. My grandma used to pick the lemons from her tree and go from there, i remember being with her and helping from start to finish. So there is sentimental value along the fact that I love to eat all wrapped up in one!
